Wall Street Futures tad higher

Wall Street Futures traded mixed on Thursday as investors remained cautious amid ongoing trade talks between the United States and several countries.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 50 percent tariff on copper imports effective August 1. He also issued tariff notices to seven smaller trading partners and warned of a 200 percent levy on all pharmaceutical imports.

Several countries are awaiting official communication from the White House, even as hopes remain high for an early mini trade deal with India.

At around 5:30 pm IST, US equity futures pointed to a mixed opening. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were trading slightly higher, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures slipped into the red, indicating a subdued start for Wall Street at 7 pm IST.

On Wednesday, US markets closed higher, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq ending at a record high. Nvidia’s rally pushed the chipmaker’s valuation to $4 trillion, making it the first company to hit that milestone.

In Asia, key indices ended mixed. South Korea’s Kospi, China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed higher, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 declined.

Back home, domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended lower, dragged by losses in IT and telecom stocks. The global tariff uncertainty also contributed to the weak mood in the market.

Sensex fell 345.80 points or 0.41 percent to close at 83,190.28. During the day, it dropped as much as 401.11 points to touch a low of 83,134.97. The Nifty declined 120.85 points or 0.47 percent to settle at 25,355.25.
