Market snaps 4-day fall; Sensex jumps 363 pts

Indian equity indices snapped a four-day losing streak and ended higher on September 3, with the Nifty closing just below the 23,900 mark, led by buying across metal, oil & gas and private banking stocks.


Positive global cues and easing expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike at its upcoming monetary policy meeting supported the market opening. The Nifty crossed the 24,000 mark during the session, but intraday profit booking pared some of the gains with Nifty closing near to 23,900  after the Closing Auction Session (CAS).

At close, the Sensex was up 362.57 points or 0.48 percent at 76,515.43, and the Nifty was up 24.25 points or 0.10 percent at 23,897.70.

For the week, BSE Sensex and Nifty fell nearly 1% each.

The broader market traded mixed with Nifty Midcap index slipped 0.2%, while the Smallcap index gained 0.2% to hit a fresh record high.

Sector-wise, the Nifty Metal index was the top performer, rising more than 1%, followed by private banks and oil & gas stocks. Auto, IT, PSU Bank, pharma and realty indices declined around 0.5% each.

Among the Nifty gainers, SBI Life Insurance, Tata Steel, HDFC Life, Reliance Industries and Trent were the top performers, while HCL Technologies, Coal India, Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Finserv were the major laggards.

More than 180 stocks touched 52-week high including New India Assurance, IFCI, Maharashtra Seamless, Welspun Living, ACME Solar, Capri Global, Lenskart Solutions, Elgi Equipments, RBL Bank, Craftsman, Solar Industries, Redington, Usha Martin, PTC Industries, Anthem Biosciences, among others. 

Among individual stocks, Angel One rose 4% as gross client acquisition rose 19.9% , shares of Ramco System added more than 4% on signing MoU with Safran Helicopter Engines.

Sterlite Technologies added 5% after board approved a capex of Rs 3,000 crore for the company’s existing manufacturing facility and Polycab India shares shed 6% after JPMorgan kept an 'overweight' rating.

Shares of Shanthi Gears jumped 6% after board appointed Sai Krishna Alluri as CFO, while WeWork India share price added 2.5% after board has given in-principle approval for setting up a 10 MWp captive solar power plant in Karnataka.

The Indian rupee ended unchanged at ?94.49 per dollar on Friday, compared with Thursday’s close of ?94.49.
