Less than three years after entering the automotive sector, JSW Group has entered the electric commercial vehicle (CV) market, unveiling the Ampstar brand on September 22 and announcing plans to build a portfolio of electric trucks and buses over the next three to four years.

JSW Greentech, housed under JSW Projects and controlled by the Sajjan Jindal Family Trust, has invested Rs 2,500 crore in a CV manufacturing plant at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra.

The plant has an annual capacity of around 15,000 vehicles, which can be expanded to 25,000 units. It will have integrated battery systems and an automated truck cabin line.

The company showcased an electric bus and an electric truck, with the average price of the two vehicles at around Rs 80 lakh.

Ampstar’s bus portfolio will cover 7-18 metre vehicles for school, city and intercity applications. On the truck side, the company will initially offer a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, followed by tippers, fixed-body trucks and dumpers.
