MTAR Tech zooms on duty waiver
Jun 12 2026 6:34PM
Shares of MTAR Tech, Walchandnagar Industries, Power Mech Projects rose up to 13% on June 12 a day after the finance ministry waived customs duties on all goods imported for nuclear power generation, covering imports made between April 1, 2019 and January 31, 2026.

This will shield importers from any tax demands on such shipments during the period, the notification said.

In the annual budget released in February, the government had extended this exemption for nuclear power equipment from customs duty until 2035. It will now be applied retrospectively, according to Thursday's order.

The notification clarified that any customs duty, if any, payable on imports of the specified goods during the period would not be required to be paid. In March, Union Minister Jitendra Singh had said that the imports of goods required for nuclear power projects will be duty free, which will bring down the project cost and the per- unit cost of electricity generated.

MTAR Technologies is a core manufacturer for the country's civilian nuclear power program, supplying highly critical, precision-engineered assemblies directly to the "nuclear island" of reactors.

Out of MTAR’s Rs 2,581.9 crore closing order book for FY26, the civilian nuclear power segment contributed a substantial 26.3%.

MTAR contributed 70% of the components to India's successful prototype fast breeder nuclear reactor, capturing a revenue potential of nearly ?1,500 crore per reactor.

India's broader target to expand nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047 and the policy opening for private sector project deployment are driving significant long-term order visibility for MTAR’s advanced engineering hubs.

Walchandnagar Industries is a leading Indian heavy engineering company that manufactures critical, high-precision Class I equipment and components for nuclear power reactors, whose shares were trading 6% higher on June 12.
