Indian equity indices ended weak on September 2, extended selling on the third consecutive day, amid a sharp surge in crude oil prices on the back of escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Amid weak global cues, the Indian equity indices opened lower and with extended selling Nifty tested day's low of 23,786.80, however, managed to close just above 23900 level after the closing auction session (CAS).
At close, the Sensex was down 373.93 points or 0.49 percent at 76,570.35, and the NifNifty was down 141.35 points or 0.59 percent at 23,914.45.
The broader market also ended lower, with Nifty midcap index falling 0.5 percent and smallcap index falling 0.4 percent.
Biggest Nifty losers were Eicher Motors, Wipro, Bajaj Auto, Asia Paints, M&M, while gainers included Coal India, Adani Ports, Bajaj Finserv, Adani Enterprises and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.
Except Energy and Oil & Gas, all other sectoral indices ended in the red with Auto, Information Technology, Media down 1.2-1.8 percent.
More than 140 stocks touched 52-week low including Alok Industries, Voltas, Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands, JK Lakshmi Cement, ICICI Lombard, KEC International, IRCTC, Brainbees Solutions, Rail Vikas Nigam, HUL, Swan Corp, P&G Hygiene, Dabur India, Inox Wind, PI Industries, IRFC, Kama Holdings, Aditya Birla Fashion, among others.
Among individual stocks, GPT Infraprojects share price rose 1.5% after the company emerged as the lowest bidder for a ?483 crore project, while Coal India gained nearly 4% after UBS maintained its ‘Buy’ rating.
Adani Green Energy jumped 2.7% after operationalising a 139 MW solar power project at Khavda, Gujarat. EMS surged 3% after emerging as the lowest bidder for a ?218.65 crore project, while Hero MotoCorp slipped 4% after exports declined 24.6% in August.
Welspun Corp touched a 52-week high after signing an MoU with the developers of Jordan’s National Water Carrier Project and the Jordanian government, while Sical Logistics advanced 5% after receiving a ?534.73 crore Letter of Acceptance from Central Coalfields.
